Our first broken bone

Garrett went to the orthopedic surgeon yesterday and he confirmed that the break went right through his growth plate. Luckily, it is a clean break and he didn't see any reason why it shouldn't heal fabulously. Garrett goes back in two weeks were they'll x-ray again and if it looks good then no more cast, otherwise they'll recast for another two weeks. I figure if 4 weeks is the max - that's not to shabby. After a little persuading he finally decided on the green cast because "it looks like dinosaur skin" instead of the really bright pink which was his first pick!!!

As you can see, the "coolness" of his cast competes with the triceratops sticker on the other arm that the x-ray tech gave him. All in all he's been a really good patient and I have to say I think he's loving all the attention.

Insights

Thanks to Becca for the idea - I decided for our Enrichment Night this month to focus on our mental & physical health with New Year's resolutions and all. We had President Hatch in our stake, who is the clinical director of Valley Mental Health, speak on depression, stress and anxiety. For the physical aspect, Richelle Lund who has trained NBA, WNBA and Olympians came (thank you Ashley). I thought I'd share some of the interesting things I learned.
From Pres. Hatch:
The highest spike of people at our emergency room is at 5:30pm on Sundays. Who is coming in? Relief Society sisters with symptoms that are related to mental health issues. That shocked me. A large part of depression, stress & anxiety in our lives is because we are comparing our "worst" self with someone's "best"self.
He emphasized the need for positive thinking with these tips:
  • Thought Stopping - when a negetive thought comes in, verbally say "STOP"
  • Schedule Worry Time - set a day and time frame that you'll allow yourself to worry about what ever it is that's bothering you...thus when you stop a thought you can tell yourself that you'll worry about it at this specific time...and then move on.
  • Three Good Things - every day find three things that are good, regardless of how small or simple they may be.

Have a Balanced Life (Mosiah 4:27). Remember the conference talk "Good, Better, Best" - read it again! Sometimes we need to get rid of good things in our lives because we are getting to much going one and it's okay to let somethings go. The need for Peace and Quiet - find it!

From Richelle Lund:

  • I loved her rule of thumb "would I feed this to my two year old?"
  • Eat breakfast
  • Eat every three hours-1 protein and 1 good carb
  • You can't eat enough vegetables
  • Fruits are better in the morning and eating it is better than drinking it (apple is better than apple juice, etc.)
  • Butter or Margarine? In it's form - the harder the better.
  • Cheese? The softer the better (think Mozzerella) - melting cheddar doesn't count :)
  • Eating honey from where you live (there are some great Utah honey makers) builds your immune system.
  • Weight lifting and aerobic together are the best way to lose weight.
  • When working on your upper or lower body start with the largest muscles first.
  • To know how many pounds you should be lifting? The last two reps should be hard.
  • Before any workout do your abs first since we tend to neglect them after a workout.

So that is what I learned last night - I hope you learned something to! Here's to a healthy and happy 2009!!!

Highlights
1/4/2009 - 1/10/2009

~Enjoyed a yummy dinner with Jon at Tepanyaki for our anniversary.

~Garrett falls of the chair and we find out the next day he has a broken arm. Unfortunately it's on the growth plate so we have to go to an orthopedic surgeon. But look how cute he is with his little Snoopy sling...

~Had our "girls lunch" at my house. Every month there has been different gals come so it's been really fun to get to know them.

~Although not fun...went to a viewing for Pam Hunsaker in my old ward. She battled cancer for 10 years so it was a blessing for her, sad for her sweet kids. Regardless of how she was feeling she always had a smile on her face and was so optimistic! What an incredible example she was to me!

~Went to the Health Fair at the Rec center and finally got a pass. Now let's just hope I use it!

Best Brother Ever!

I'm not picking favorites since I only have one brother - but he is the best! While visiting from New Mexico for Christmas he did so many nice things for all of us. On New Years Eve he took me and Alisa to lunch and we got to chat and have a grand time without any kids to interrupt. Then on New Years Day he sent us off on dates with our husbands AND watched all of our kids for four hours!!! Now that's what I call love! Ty and I have always been good buddies - when we were younger he let me dress him up as Little Bo Peep and I'd play GI Joe and He-Man for hours - so when he comes home I truly enjoy the time we get to spend together! Thanks Ty! Did I mention he's available?

Happy Anniversary!

Nine years ago I married my best friend! January 6, 2000 was a freezing day (not as bad as today) but one of the most wonderful days of my life. I remember waking up quite early so Amanda, my BFF, could come over and do my hair and then Jon picked me up to drive to the temple together. Waiting in the celestial room was so peaceful, I think we were the only ones in the room, and then we walked into the sealing room to see our family and friends. It was so overwhelming and joyous and the sealing was beautiful. The rest of the day went great and we had such a fun time seeing everyone throughout the day. It was a special day...but every day since then has been special! I love being married to Jon - he's an awesome husband, daddy, friend, confidante, and provider. Thanks for 9 great years...and many more to come!!!

Ringing in the 10 o'clock New Year

2008 Group Shot
Ansen & Ashleigh, Me & Jon, Kris (Grin was working), Natalie & Greg
Thanks Jaxon (age 6) for being our photographer!

I can't remember how long our New Year's Eve tradition has been in effect (maybe 8 years) but it's always proven to be a great time. We hosted this year and truly out did ourselves with pizza but at least I set the table with my nice plates and glasses! We have such a wonderful time when we get together, we eat, laugh, relive the old college days, play games, and eat some more. As we've started families and the kids haven gotten older our party has gotten a little stressful trying to keep an eye on the kids and such. We also tried to wrap up early this year so we could get kids in bed a bit earlier - I think next year we may have to try sitters! Regardless, this year was still fun and I so enjoy my friendships with all of you. We missed the Day's but we will forgive you!

What cute kids! Max, Garrett, Addison, Lexie, Rylee, Olivia and Ella (Jaxon & Gavin were having too much fun in the basement I suppose).

Note: No alcohol was consumed before this pose. Just good ol' brotherly love!
